Club History and Project 2024

1907 - 1928

The original 9-hole Basingstoke course was set up on land just north of Basingstoke station by Charles Lloyd, the club's first professional and was established on the 6th December 1907.

From these humble beginnings the club thrived until the Great War where it was taken over and used as a training airfield. Whilst this land was never used again as a playable golf course the club members continued to meet and play at other clubs under the name of Basingstoke Golf Club until finally, in 1926, they started to look for a new site to build a course.

1928 - 2021

Kempshott Park was the chosen land and James Braid was commissioned to design and construct the course. After receiving favourable reports from Mr Braid, the 106 acres of land was purchased and work commenced.

The course was completed in 1928 and was officially opened by James Braid, Harry Vardon and Miss Molly Gourlay on a cold, wet and windy March day. It provided a challenging examination of your golf skills, yet is fair and playable for golfers of all abilities.

2021 - 2024

The Club again has moved to a new home purchasing the 162 acre site at Dummer Golf Club in 2021. Only a mile from the old site and still partly on Kempshott Park, the stunning new course sits on chalk and makes a wonderful setting for a sweeping downland course.

With the Club managing one of the biggest projects in the country, they acquired the services of Course Architect, Bruce Weller of Weller Designs to help them realise their vision of the redesign and construction of a fabulous new and modern course for the 21st century. That vision was to build one of the finest courses in Hampshire while keeping its Members at the heart of the Club as they created a course and facility for the future. With creeping bent greens (the first in Hampshire), rubber crumb bunkers, two new lagoons and a state-of-the-art irrigation system. The stage was set to realise this wonderful piece of downland.

Course works started in late July 2022 with the completion of the course works 22 months later. The Greenkeeper's building was first to break ground in February 2023 followed by the Clubhouse in April. The Greenkeeper's was finished in the December with the Clubhouse completed in August 2024. The Driving Range building works ran concurrently with the Clubhouse and was completed in December 2024 with the soil importation project and range outfield due to finish mid 2025.

2024 - The Next Era for Basingstoke

In June 2024 the first Members trod on the wonderful new layout, with the full course and stunning Clubhouse coming online to Members in the September. A state of the art Driving Range will be fully operational in late 2025 with the course and facilities available to visitors within the next 12 months!
